Last week the Government launched the Great British Insulation Scheme valued at £1 billion.
This scheme will help households improve their energy efficiency and could save families an average of £400 a year on their energy bills.
Upgrading homes to be more energy efficient is the best long-term solution for reducing energy costs, tackling fuel poverty, and keeping us all warm and healthy over the winter.
This scheme will extend help to over 300,000 households representing a substantial investment by the government to make our homes warmer and more efficient.
As costs have spiralled following Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine and with autumn fast approaching, this scheme is needed more than ever to address the shortfall in our energy needs. While energy prices have come down, they still remain high for millions across the country, and we must go further to secure our long-term security and deliver cleaner, cheaper and greener energy.
Last year the Government stepped in to help families, paying half the typical energy bill. This year, the Government is also determined to cut energy bills and is another example of support available for lower income households grappling with the cost of living. The Great British Insulation Scheme will boost existing support for the most vulnerable in the country and will run alongside the existing Energy Company Obligation Scheme which provides free energy efficiency improvements, such as insulation, heat pumps and solar panels.
The new scheme has also been broadened to include thousands more families. Households can check whether they are eligible for energy efficiency support using an online tracker tool and support ranges from insulation and draft proofing to new windows as doors, as well as cavity wall and underfloor insulation. The tool will ask you a series of questions including how you heat your home, whether your home has solid or cavity walls and if you are receiving any benefits.
The full eligibility criteria as well as further details on what help is available can be found on the Gov.UK website.
As the scheme has been extended beyond the low income and vulnerable households, I would urge all my constituents to check whether they are eligible for a home insulation upgrade to help keep our homes warm this winter. If you are eligible, you should apply.
