It goes without saying that I am incredibly disappointed to see Amazon announcing a consultation on the proposed closure of their Rugeley site. This news will be a shock to many, particularly employees, contactors and the wider Rugeley community.
The Amazon site in Rugeley has been a big part of the local economy for over a decade, providing jobs not only to residents of Rugeley, but also the wider area. I have visited the site numerous times and spoken to the staff who work there.
Whilst I am pleased that staff impacted will be offered the chance to be re-deployed to a new site, I know that this may not be a viable option for everyone.
I will be meeting with Amazon this week to discuss the proposed closure of the site and ask what can be done to help all my constituents who are impacted by this announcement.
Should the closure go ahead, we need to ensure that all of those employees for whom the move is not a viable option are supported in seeking alternative employment and that the site is occupied by another business that can provide employment for residents in the local area.
If anyone does have questions or concerns that they would like me to put to Amazon please do get in touch with me.
