It was so exciting to see the Queen’s Baton passing through Cannock Chase.
There was an incredible turnout from the community along the route of the baton relay, and at the stopping points in Rugeley, Hednesford and Cannock. Be it people cheering on the baton-bearers, community celebrations at the stopping points or the many smiles on people faces, it was a magical day.
Everywhere the baton went there was an incredible community spirit on display. It was also lovely to meet some of the baton-bearers. Community champions who really deserved the once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of the relay.
It was a real honour, as a West Midlands MP, to see the baton reach its final destination when it arrived at the opening ceremony. The atmosphere was electric, and a fantastic start to the highly anticipated games.
The day of celebration was something to remember and shows what a warm welcome the mountain biking competition can expect when it comes to Cannock Chase as part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Cannock Chase hosting the Mountain Biking is a huge honour for us and truly puts the Chase on the map internationally. I hope that this is something we can long build on to ensure that the Chase remains an important visitor attraction in the area.
I also want to congratulate England’s Lionesses on their amazing achievement. It was a nail biting final against Germany, but the team continued its amazing performance to win 2-1, finally bringing football home! The women’s England team will be an inspiration to a generation of young girls, and I hope that, like the Commonwealth Games, more people are inspired to participate in sport.
