Last week the Prime Minister announced a pause to the next stage of the roadmap on the 21st June.
I know many of you are disappointed by this news. But with the Delta variant spreading fast and infection rates rising across the country, including here in Cannock Chase where they’ve trebled, we have had to act to keep people safe.
This decision shows our commitment to keeping people safe and protecting our NHS as well as our determination not to go back into another lockdown.
When we set out on our roadmap to freedom a few months ago, we were clear progress should be cautious but irreversible.
If you’re like me you will have been enjoying going back to the pub and meeting up with friends. By taking this step to pause the next stage of the roadmap we can carry on getting our lives back to normal, while ensuring we don’t go backwards.
Everyone has made huge sacrifices over the past year, staying at home to protect the NHS and to save lives. These sacrifices have been hard, but necessary to control the virus and we don’t want to waste the efforts that have been made to do this.
By taking the tough, but sensible decision to delay the next step of the roadmap we will give our NHS a few more crucial weeks to vaccinate millions more younger adults and complete our roadmap to freedom.
I know this news will be hard for people who work in industries that remain closed or operating at limited capacity. But I can assure you the Government will continue to support these sectors until restrictions have been lifted.
Over the next few weeks let’s work together to enjoy summer safely by continuing to follow guidelines to keep each other safe. By being cautious now we have the chance – in the next four weeks – to save many thousands of lives by vaccinating millions more people and steer the country along the road to freedom.
