Slitting Mill Fire Update
I have continued to engage with Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, the Environment Agency and other relevant parties over the last few days regarding the ongoing situation at Oak Tree Farm, Slitting Mill.
Last night I had talks with Chief Fire Officer Becci Bryant to discuss the situation and what further measures are being taken to ensure the fire is extinguished ASAP.
I am aware that various organisations are now involved in the incident, including the Fire Service, the Environment Agency, Cannock Chase District Council, Staffordshire County Council, Public Health England and the Health and Safety Executive - looking at all aspects of the fire and the impact on local residents.
Agencies have been making regular visits to the site and, as per my update earlier this week, diggers are on site to accelerate the process of extinguishing the fire.
I have been informed that a tactical Co-ordinating Group has been set up involving all relevant parties which will be meeting at the site today to assess the situation further. Experts from other Fire Services are also being consulted based upon their experience of similar incidents and specialist equipment may be brought in if deemed to be an effective way of accelerating the demise of the fire.
I stressed the need to get this fire extinguished as quickly as possible, as residents are rightly concerned about the potential health risks, as well as the impact on normal day to day life, the safety of livestock and crops in the area, and the impact on public health and nearby wildlife.
I pointed out that there has been insufficient information being released to the public and more information needs to be made available at regular intervals. I therefore welcome news that the authorities are addressing the need for more communication with the public and I will post any information on my website and social media.
This morning I raised the issue of the fire in the House of Commons with the Rt Hon David Lidington, Leader of the House of Commons. I not only raised the plight of residents but also the need to review legalisation relating to the illegal dumping of waste, enforcement action and the penalties for those flouting the law. Tomorrow I will be having a meeting with all relevant bodies locally to discuss the issue further and will release an update as soon as I can.
