Amanda Milling MP held a jobs fair on Friday 17th June at the Rugeley Rose Theatre. The fair hosted 34 exhibitors who spoke to job seekers from the Cannock Chase area who were seeking employment, including employees and contractors from Rugeley B Power Station. Exhibitors were from a range of businesses including engineering, retail, banking, manufacturing, armed forces, creative design and care, as well as recruitment firms, apprenticeship providers and advice agencies. The fair followed recent figures that showed unemployment falling again in Cannock Chase. Latest figures released by the Office of National Statistics show unemployment down by 12% in the last 12 months. Figures for May show a decline of 73% in unemployment in Cannock Chase since May 2010, with only 700 people remaining on Jobseekers Allowance. These figures show the continuing trend in Cannock Chase, which has seen a steady fall in unemployment year on year. Amanda Milling said: “I was very keen to hold this event after the disappointing news of the closure of Rugeley B Power Station. I was really pleased to see many members of the power station workforce attend the event, along with other job seekers from the area, all of whom were talking to local businesses with job vacancies to fill. The jobs fair was very successful and I am led to believe that someone secured a new job within hours of the event.” Amanda added: “I am delighted to welcome news of a 73% fall in the number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance in Cannock Chase since May 2010. These figures show that the Chancellor’s economic plan is working as the local economy continues to grow as a result of ongoing investment and job creation in Cannock Chase." The Cannock Chase MP primarily organised the Jobs Fair to support the Rugeley B workforce, including employees and contractors, who are seeking new job opportunities following the announcement that it will finally close this month.
