I would like to pay tribute to Colour Sergeant Watchman V - Staffordshire Bull Terroir and mascot of the Staffordshire Regimental Association - who has recently passed away.
Watchman V was the fifth mascot to bear the name Watchman in a line of mascots stretching back to 1882.
He served our county for over 10 years and was a regular sight at local Remembrance parades, the Anzac Day ceremony and so many other local events.
Watchman also supported several military causes including the Royal British Legion, the Poppy Appeal and the RSPCA.
It was always a delight to meet Watchman V and his handler Greg. I have fond memories of seeing Watchman in Cannock Chase and seeing how excited he was to be there.
In 2016, myself and my fellow Staffordshire MPs nominated Watchman for Westminster Dog of the Year.
His service and dedication, combined with his lovable temperament, secured the hearts of the nation as he went on to win the public vote in the prestigious competition.
We have been so lucky to have such an iconic, hardworking and loved mascot as our symbol here in Staffordshire.
I would like to pass on my sincerest condolences to Watchman V's family at this sad time.
