I have been informed by Cannock Chase District Council that they, along with Staffordshire County Council and Public Health England, have carried out independent tests at Oak Tree Farm on the smoke.
They have released a public statement confirming that little to no trace of asbestos has been found in the smoke, stating that they believe this means people's health is not at risk. While the smoke caused discomfort and irritation to many local residents, I appreciate that there was a real concern about asbestos. A total of 11 independent air tests have been taken, both before and after the fire was capped with soil. These tests revealed that the level of asbestos fibres in the smoke is so low, they cannot be detected by the equipment.
The Council have stated as a result of these tests that the risk of local people breathing in fibres is incredibly low, meaning they should not see any adverse effects. They have also said testing will continue even now the fire is capped.
While it is disappointing that it has taken the agencies so long to get the air tested, it is reassuring to know the results.
Cannock Chase District Council air quality levels are being tested daily and details of these results will be uploaded to the Council's website. The results are updated each day and can be viewed at www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk/slittingmill. Requests for hard copies can be made by calling the Council on 01543 462621.
Now the fire is capped it needs to be allowed to cool before the waste materials can be removed and the site cleared.
As always I will continue to keep residents updated on any developments and any ongoing issues as they arise. If you need any help with this issue, or any other issues, then please do get in touch with me.
