Since my last column, the Omicron variant has been spreading extremely fast across the United Kingdom. It is consistently breaking records for the highest number of cases recorded since the pandemic began.
In order to get this variant under control the government has moved the country to Plan B restrictions, introducing necessary steps to help stop the spread of the virus.
The steps taken include working from home where you can, wearing face coverings in most indoor public spaces and the introduction of proving you have been double vaccinated or have a negative lateral flow test if you wish to enter large public events. These include nightclubs, indoor venues with 500 or more unseated people, unseated outdoor venues with more than 4,000 people and any venue with more than 10,000 people.
Alongside these measures the Prime Minister has announced a drive to get people to have their third jab.
While it is still unclear how ill the variant will make those who catch it, we do know that two vaccines is not enough to give sufficient protection against Omicron.
But, by having a booster jab, we can build up our defences against Omicron and play our part in fighting this variant.
The booster jab along with the balanced and proportionate measures the government has introduced will allow us to protect ourselves and our loved ones this winter – reduce the pressures on our NHS and ensure we stay a step ahead of the virus.
If we are to beat the Coronavirus so we can all have a happier 2022 I urge anyone over 18 to get boosted now.
Despite the continuing fight against the Coronavirus I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and a very happy new year!
