We have always known that a mass vaccination programme would be our best hope to get life back to normal as quickly as possible. It is also the most effective way to keep you and your loved ones safe.
New data suggests our vaccine programme has so far prevented an estimated 7.2 million infections and 27,000 deaths in England alone.
That is why I want to encourage every adult over the age of 18 to book an appointment for both jabs as soon as possible.
This will help to ensure we can irreversibly remove all lockdown restrictions on 19th July, and progress to Step Four of the Lockdown Roadmap.
Due to rapid spread of the more transmissible Delta variant, progress to Step Four was paused last month. However, this has given the NHS time to vaccinate millions more people. I am delighted that since 14th June, around one million more over 40s have received their second doses.
The evidence is clear that two doses provide highly effective protection against the Delta variant. Once you have been double jabbed, you are less likely to catch coronavirus, pass it on to your family and friends, or die from the disease.
Booking a jab is straightforward and can be done via the NHS website or by calling 119. Local vaccine centres have also been running weekend walk-in sessions where you can ‘grab a jab’ without an appointment.
I would like to thank every single healthcare worker and volunteer who have ensured the success of our vaccine roll-out. I am also grateful to everyone who has already come forward and been jabbed.
The case for getting vaccinated is clear, so please get your jab when you can, so together we can keep each other and our loved ones safe.
