These past weeks have been some of the hardest in my six years in Parliament.
In one week we lost two of our finest Conservative MPs. James Brokenshire lost his battle with lung cancer and Sir David Amess was murdered while carrying out a constituency surgery.
Both taken too soon, in tragic circumstances. Both were committed, dedicated public servants, devoted to the people they represented. Parliament will be a lesser place without them. But we will never forget the work they did and the legacies they’ve left behind.
I am still struggling to come to terms with the reality that yet another MP has been murdered while simply doing the job they were elected to do – meeting with constituents and trying to resolve their issues. One of the best parts of our democracy is the accessibility you have to your elected representatives at every level of politics. I love that I am accessible to the people of Cannock Chase and feel it is one of the most important parts of our democracy.
I know not everyone will agree with my politics, or even have voted for me. But disagreement in a democracy is to be expressed at the ballot box – and not through verbal or physical violence.
Regardless of party affiliation, MPs are completely committed to their constituents and improving the area they represent.
While a lot has changed in Parliament, I will continue to work hard as your local MP. This includes attending events, visiting businesses, meeting constituents, and working to make Cannock Chase a better place for us all.
