Over the past few weeks, the UK has hosted COP26 in Glasgow. This was an international climate summit to agree a global strategy to tackle climate change.
I was delighted to attend in my capacity as Minister for Asia at the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).
I was proud to launch the Adapt Alliance which will ensure international collaboration on climate adaptation research and innovation. I also spent time meeting Ministers from across Asia to talk about how we can work together to protect our planet for the future.
The summit concluded with a global agreement to accelerate action on climate change - the first ever international agreement to phase down coal and a roadmap to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees.
There are a huge step forward in tackling the worst impacts of climate change, but there is still work to do to ensure we deliver on the commitments made.
While efforts are being made on an international scale, I’m proud that right here in Cannock Chase we’re playing our part in that effort to protect our planet for future generations.
Rugeley is leading the way with the redevelopment of the old Power Station site.
After three years of extensive community engagement and planning, the Council authorised a mixed-use development of 2,300 new low carbon homes. Rugeley will also have one of the UK's first carbon neutral schools – John Taylor School.
By making changes right here in Cannock Chase not only are we helping the global effort to tackle climate change but we’re ensuring that we protect our fantastic countryside for future generations.
One of the places that will benefit from that is The Chase, which has been a protected landscape since 1958 due to the habitats’ environmental importance.
I was recently reminded of the beauty and natural diversity of the Cannock Chase while horse riding with the Cannock Chase Trekking Centre.
Its beauty is something that I want to see preserved for the future generations of Cannock Chase - I am sure the step forward made at COP26 and the efforts being made here will help us to do just that.
